Internships

Why exactly Internships are good.

A lesson to all: While in college take on an internship.

I’m currently in my first internship out of two and it was one of the better things that I have done during my career in college. Internships need to be done no matter what your major is. Companies look for those people fresh out of college that already have experience in the field. Most of the time, you can’t find a job to get that experience because you are still in college, don’t have a degree, and don’t have all the knowledge that the job position calls for. That’s exactly what an internship is for. You can have that job where your position description is listed as “to learn”. You get the reward back of having that experience that is needed for after graduation. Yes; you don’t need an internship to be able to find a decent job in your field but it is looked upon better by companies. It shows that while in school you had the want to learn more outside of the classroom and that you actually show interest into what you are studying. Some other perks while having an internship would be that most departments have an internship class where you can get credit for completing the internship while filling out some progress reports and writing a final report. Also, there are many paid internships emerging in the business world.

Some things I have learned in my position is more website design and IT work for a company I wouldn’t have realized really needed the department. I have found a field that I would have known very well. Granted I don’t know so much more about drilling than I did five weeks ago but I know enough to handle a job in an IT department. There I found another perk to internships: they show you paths that you never thought you could take.

I also plan to hold a position with a industrial reality business in Reno to work on social media. Already, my contact, Mark Glenn, has given me contacts to work on other internships and help with other projects that I am working on during my career in college. These perks are everywhere and there are so many more that I have yet to find and that I might not even find but others will.

Internships aren’t hard to find as well. It’s easy to get on your local Craigslist to look it up for starters. Also, check out our college’s website to see if there is someone that works with job connections that can help you out. For example, UNR’s College of Business has Jane Bessette and a website called Career Connections where students can look up jobs and internships but in and off of the campus.
