Project Management?

For starters, what exactly is project management?

There are projects everywhere in the world.

According to the Project Management Institute, project management is “the application of knowledge, skills, and techniques to execute projects effectively and efficiently. It’s a strategic competency for organizations, enabling them to tie project results to business goals – thus, better compete in their markets.” (PMI Definition) Projects are temporary and unique and start and end on specific dates. Project management is involved in all aspects of the business world. It is common for many companies to have a project management area with project managers and teams. It is also common to have project management be involved in school as well. Everyone has had those classes with the teacher that forces you to get in a group and work on a project. Just like with a project in the work force, these school projects have a day you start (when you form your group and get the instructions) and the due date.

Project management has five (5) process groups and nine (9) knowledge areas.
Five Process Groups:

  1. Initiation
  2. Planning
  3. Executing
  4. Monitor and Controlling
  5. Results

Nine Knowledge Areas:

  1. Scope
  2. Time
  3. Cost
  4. Quality
  5. Project Integration Management
  6. Human Resources Management
  7. Communications Management
  8. Risk Management
  9. Procurement management

All project managers must have many of these areas and will go through every one of the process groups. As like the picture above, projects are built by the scope of the project, the time it takes, and the cost for creating the results. The only way the results will fully work is based on the quality of the work.

Project management may not be for everyone but it’s a part of the business world that should be known about by all. There are those that go out and get their PMP (Project Management Professional) while others go into IT security. In the next weeks, this section will give a better view into the world of PM. This is my project and I’m the project manager while you are my project stakeholder. The scope is information regarding project management, the cost is priceless, and time is 8 weeks, every Friday.
